More than 1.000 employees of the HEYCO Group work at eight sites in Germany, the Czech Republic, Ireland and the USA, collaborating with customers on technical projects for the automotive industry. These include components for electric vehicles and high-voltage battery systems.<\/p>\n

Founded in 1937 and now run by the third generation of the Heynen family of entrepreneurs, the HEYCO Group sees itself as a long-term, down-to-earth and reliable medium-sized company.<\/p>\n

Plastic cell frame for holding the round cell batteries<\/p><\/div>\n

HEYCO manufactures parts specifically developed for electric vehicles and high-voltage battery systems, as well as components that can be used in vehicles with different powertrain configurations. One example is the cell frame. Its components are manufactured at the plants in Remscheid and Tittling. The cell frame houses cylindrical cells and aids their cooling within the battery enclosure. It is manufactured using a two-component injection moulding process involving different materials; in this process, metal inserts made from a special alloy are overmoulded.<\/p>\n

In addition to cell frames, components for fire protection and crash safety are among HEYCO\u2019s key areas of focus. In the event of an accident, deformation can damage the battery unit or put strain on its mounting to the bodywork. At its Tittling site, HEYCO manufactures forged and finished components such as structural elements and edge reinforcements. These components are designed to reinforce the battery housing, limit deformation and keep the battery unit in its intended position. The specific protective effect depends on the overall design, the installation configuration and the tested load cases.<\/p>\n

In the event of an uncontrolled battery fire – known as \u2018thermal runaway\u2019 – additional protective measures can help to limit the effects of heat and flames for a defined period of time. Depending on the system, protective elements made from fire-retardant materials and additional fire-resistant layers are used for this purpose. The materials are selected to meet defined requirements for electrical breakdown strength and heat resistance. HEYCO and STEINMANN have developed and tested appropriate hybrid components. These include custom-shaped plastic covers that can be combined with fire-retardant material. Whether such components are suitable, and for which applications, depends on the respective technical requirements and test results.<\/p>\n

Within the HEYCO Group, the HEYCO subsidiary CARL STEINMANN Kunststoffverarbeitung GmbH already supplies fire protection materials for series production applications in high-voltage battery systems. With effect from the start of 2023, CARL STEINMANN acquired the Czech supplier C connect s.r.o., thereby expanding its in-house production capacity for safety-critical fire protection components.<\/p>\n

Nico Stratemeyer, Managing Director of CARL STEINMANN, welcomes the fact that operations will continue at the site with the experienced team.\u00a0 The core competencies of the plant, located near Prague, include the machining of plastics, foams and films, as well as screen printing and the assembly of small sub-assemblies. Among other things, the plant manufactures thermal insulation mats, seals, plastic parts, and protective, decorative and sealing films. The company sees potential for growth in products designed to protect vehicle battery systems in the event of an accident.<\/p>\n

It was already under the leadership of senior managing director Ernst Peter Heynen that CARL STEINMANN Kunststoffverarbeitung GmbH was incorporated into the HEYCO Group and integrated into the Remscheid headquarters at Birgden III. The expansion to include a second production site builds on the subsidiary\u2019s development over the past decades.<\/p>\n

Markus Heynen, Managing Partner of the HEYCO Group, sees the acquisition as a reflection of the company\u2019s adaptability.\u00a0 HEYCO must adapt flexibly to the demands of the international automotive industry. The company\u2019s development is guided by changes in the sector, including electromobility and automated driving.\u00a0 Business areas and production requirements may change accordingly. \u201cFlexibility is the order of the day for the near future if you want to still be present on the market in 10 years\u2019 time. And that is what we want,\u201d emphasises Heynen.<\/p>\n

This shift is also evident in the labour market. At HEYCO, an increasing number of women are opting for technical apprenticeships in which they have previously been under-represented. Training its own young talent is a top priority for HEYCO. This year, 6 new apprentices are starting commercial or technical vocational training at HEYCO\u2019s German sites. HEYCO thus remains committed to actively promoting young talent.<\/p>\n

In addition to its original business in hand tools, the HEYCO Group is now primarily active as a supplier of plastic and forged components to the automotive industry. Furthermore, HEYCO is highly regarded as a development partner in the modular and systems business.<\/p>\n

The HEYCO Group employs more than 1.000 staff at 8 sites in Germany, Europe and the USA. It develops and manufactures technically sophisticated components.<\/p>\n
